It is a gas at room temperature. Carbon monoxide is an intermediate in 4-amino-2-methyl-5-diphosphomethylpyrimidine biosynthesis in E. coli. It is a product for enzyme HMP-P synthase which catalyzes the chemical reaction 5-amino-1-(5-phospho-beta-D-ribosyl)imidazole + S-adenosyl-L-methionine -> 4-amino-2-methyl-5-phosphomethylpyrimidine + 5'-deoxyadenosine + L-methionine + formate + carbon monoxide + 3 H+ (EcoCyc compound: CARBON-MONOXIDE).
